The rules in one list
- SPF and DKIM on the domain you send from.
- DMARC published for that domain, at least
p=none, with the From domain aligned to SPF or DKIM. - One-click unsubscribe using the
List-UnsubscribeandList-Unsubscribe-Postheaders, honoured within two days. - Spam complaint rate under 0.3%, and ideally under 0.1%.
- Valid forward and reverse DNS for sending IPs, and TLS for delivery.
Gmail and Yahoo began enforcing these rules for bulk senders in 2024, and Microsoft followed for Outlook.com in 2025.
How to meet them
- Send from a domain you own, never a free mailbox.
- Publish SPF and DKIM, then DMARC with reporting turned on.
- Use sending software that adds one-click unsubscribe headers.
- Warm up new IPs slowly, over two to four weeks.
- Clean your list before sending: remove bounces and addresses that never open.
Your list matters more than your server
Rules and servers only get you to the door. Inbox placement depends on people wanting your mail. Send only to people who opted in, verify old lists before a campaign, and stop mailing people who have not opened in six months.
